The Marrakech Project

Summer 2024

Constant search for new materials

At the Marrakesh events in the stores we will present a new project that was developed in the Daniela Lehbi house in the last year. Following the proliferation of plastic waste in the world, more and more factories are specializing in various techniques of recycling, research and re-creation of useful products.

As part of a constant search for new materials and new techniques, we found a factory in the East that produces hand-woven plastic baskets from recycled plastic.

We used this base as a raw material for the design of a new basket bag, which combines the innovative and recycled material together with the traditional, age-old material for creating bags since the days of the Bible: leather.

In the two-and-a-half technique, leather strips are caught in the recycled plastic baskets.

The development work took five months, during which we experimented with different weaving methods, forms of carrying, and two- and two-way techniques. From this fascinating hybrid between the materials, an innovative, functional, and beautiful bag was created, which we are presenting for the first time at the fair.

As part of the marquee events in the stores, we will create bags live, in front of the visiting audience, and the spectators will each be able to choose their favorite combination of materials and colors: the plastic base, the leather straps, the handles, and the inner compartment.

In the design of the bag itself we interwoven elements taken from Daniela's original archive, whether it is the iconic gondola shape, the coated rope strap, the knot closure that has represented Daniela for years. This is Uri's creative way of preserving the design language of his mother, Daniela, thus keeping the brand language and DNA faithful to the original, and making adjustments and changes to them in the spirit of the times, the era and technology.
